The Red Hen Project

The Red Hen Project

About us

In an ideal world, there would be no need for The Red Hen Project. But Cambridge remains one of the most unequal cities in the UK - and the need for our work has never been greater.

Now in our 27th year, we continue to stand alongside families in Cambridge, offering early, practical, and compassionate support. Our team works with children up to age 12 and their families, helping them navigate challenges ranging from school attendance, special educational needs and parenting confidence to bereavement, domestic abuse, housing and poor physical and mental health.

We were founded on the belief that education is key to breaking cycles of disadvantage. Today, we go further - building trust, strengthening relationships between home and school, and helping families feel connected, confident, and empowered.

Our work is:

  • Family-led: shaped by the voices and experiences of those we support
  • Relational: built on trust, warmth, and long-term commitment
  • Systemic: creating change not just for individuals, but across schools, services, and communities

We offer:

  • Intensive family support in homes, schools, and community spaces
  • Outreach activities including drop-ins, parenting courses and school holiday activities
  • Volunteering and ambassador opportunities that help families give back and lead change

Our team is our greatest strength - kind, non-judgemental, and deeply committed. Families tell us they feel heard, supported, and uplifted. Schools and partners trust us to reach those who need help most, before things reach crisis point.

We’re proud to be a small charity making a big impact.
